Women in Biomedical Research: Best Practices for Sustaining Career Success

March 4, 2008, Natcher Conference Center, Bethesda MD

Purpose and Outcome

Purpose

  • Women and minorities are now entering the pipeline of biomedical research at unprecedented rates and yet there is little evidence for robust advancement as leaders. The conference will provide examples of systems approaches used by businesses, military and academic health centers, as well as NIH to ensure sustained career success. The economic cost of loss of leadership as well as the economic cost of providing infrastructure to sustain the careers of women and minorities will be addressed throughout the conference.

  • The conference will summarize actions needed to promote sustained career success for women and will identify which organizations and partnerships are needed to pursue those actions and ensure opportunities for continued career success.

Expected Outcome

A standing committee (comprised of members from academic health centers, professional societies and organizations, and government agencies such as NIH) will be identified to respond to the information presented and discussed at this workshop.  The committee will establish goals, action items, and a timeline of accomplishments for the next three years. The committee will identify, collate, and highlight activities that successfully promote the sustained career success of women in biomedical research. The activities and recommendations of this committee will be made publicly available for review and input.
